| Telluride Ski Resort |
 |
 |
 |
|
Telluride,
located in a scenic valley deep in the San Juan
Mountains, has long been described as an up-and-coming
resort.Now it's arrived. Telluride Mountain Village, a
glamorous ultra-upscale resort development in the heart
of the ski terrain, is the perfect counterpoint to the
quaint and historic town of Telluride. A year-old
transportation gondola links the two communities day and
night, eliminating a tedious drive. The ski terrain
features fabled steeps and bump runs, but actually
three-quarters of the snow-kissed terrain is rated for
novice and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
Telluride has a small airport, and a larger, more
weather-resistant field is in Montrose. PO Box 11155,

| Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad |
 |
 |
The ride starts at an
elevation of 6,512 feet at Durango and rises nearly
3,000 feet on the 45-mile route to Silverton. Passengers
depart from the train station (rebuilt after a fire in
1912) at the end of Main Avenue. Because of the train's
popularity it is a good idea to make reservations in
advance, though
there are sometimes cancellations and you can ask for
stand-by seats. You have a choice of riding in
conventional coaches with seats and windows in rows, in
open-air gondola cars (with seating parallel to the
sides of the train), or, if you are at least 21 years
old, in the Alamosa parlor car and saloon.

| Fat Tire Bike Week |

 |
| Crested Butte Fat Tire Bike
Week, a.k.a. the Fat Tire Festival, now in its 18th
year, is the longest running of its breed in the nation.
And while some may argue "Fat Tire Fest" in
Crested Butte actually starts in the spring when the
first south-facing trails dry and ends in the fall after
the first, second or third snowfall, the real action
happens every June when hundreds, possibly thousands of
Lycra-wearin', shaved-legged hammerheads roll into town
for a week of group rides, clinics, and races.
